New Forest pony drifts to begin in October

The 2026 New Forest pony drifts are scheduled to begin at the start of October.

It comes after the latest assessment of equine flu in the Forest, with its impact seemingly on the decline among Commoners’ livestock.

The Verderers of the New Forest said in a statement that evidence indicates equine flu has now passed through the Forest herd.

Commoners should continue to remain vigilant regarding equine flu and maintain appropriate biosecurity measures.

Please continue to monitor your ponies for signs of illness and take sensible biosecurity precautions, particularly when animals from different holdings come together.

The arrangements for individual drifts may be reviewed if the equine flu situation changes, and further updates will be provided if necessary.

What this means for the public

The start of the pony Drifts means visitors may see Agisters and Commoners working with ponies in different parts of the Forest.

If you come across a Drift, please slow down, keep your distance and follow any instructions from those managing the drift. Do not attempt to enter areas where ponies are being gathered or handled.

Drifts are an important part of commoning, allowing Commoners and Agisters to check and care for ponies. Please respect the work taking place and give ponies, vehicles and people involved plenty of space.

Visitors should also remember that New Forest livestock have right of way on the roads. Take extra care, particularly around dawn and dusk, and never approach, feed or attempt to touch ponies or any other Forest animals.
